My MacBook Got Wet: Who Can Fix Liquid Damage in Toronto?

By Doctor Mac Toronto, 727 Bloor St W.
If you've spilled something on your MacBook, the most important thing is what you do in the next few minutes, and the second most important is who you take it to. This guide covers both: what to do right now, and how to choose a liquid damage repair service in Toronto.
What to do right now
Power it off immediately. Hold the power button until the screen goes dark. Don't shut it down through the menu if the screen is flickering or unresponsive.
Unplug the charger and disconnect everything, including drives, adapters and USB devices.
Don't turn it back on to see if it still works. Power running through a wet board is what causes most permanent damage.
Wipe the outside with a dry, lint-free cloth. Don't push anything into the ports or the keyboard.
Take it to a repair shop as soon as you can, ideally the same day. Corrosion starts quickly, and every hour counts.
What not to do
Don't charge it. Plugging in a wet Mac is the fastest way to turn a repairable spill into a dead logic board.
Don't use a hairdryer, oven or heater. Heat can damage components and push liquid deeper.
Don't bury it in rice. It doesn't pull liquid out of a laptop, and the dust can cause new problems.
Don't shake it or open it yourself unless you know what you're doing.
Don't assume it's fine because it seems to work. Liquid damage often shows up days or weeks later, as keys that stop working, a Mac that won't charge, or a machine that dies without warning.
Why liquid damage is serious on modern MacBooks
MacBooks are packed tightly, and the parts that matter most, including the logic board, the storage and the memory, are soldered together. When liquid reaches them, it can create short circuits and leave behind corrosion that keeps spreading even after the Mac looks dry.
The liquid matters too. Clean water is the least harmful. Coffee, tea, juice, pop and milk contain sugars and acids that leave sticky residue and corrode faster. Salt water is among the worst.
Who can fix liquid damage in Toronto?
There are three main routes.
An Apple Store or Apple-authorized provider
Liquid damage isn't covered by Apple's standard warranty. AppleCare+ covers accidental damage for a service fee, so check your coverage first. Apple's repair process often replaces whole assemblies rather than repairing individual components, which can make the bill high. Appointments are usually required.
An independent Mac repair shop with board-level skills
This is where most liquid damage repairs end up. A specialist can open the Mac, clean the corrosion, test the circuits, and replace only the components that failed, such as a charging chip or a fuse, rather than the whole board. That is usually cheaper than a replacement, and sometimes the only way to save your data.
Not every shop can do this, so ask whether they do component-level repair or simply swap parts.
DIY
We strongly advise against it. Cleaning a board with isopropyl alcohol in a kitchen rarely stops the corrosion, and opening a MacBook can damage cables, the battery and the display.
How much does MacBook liquid damage repair cost?
A Canadian price guide puts liquid-damage and logic-board work at roughly $250 to $700 or more, depending on the model and how much has been affected. Add 13% HST. The real figure can only be given after a diagnosis, because the cost depends on how far the liquid reached.
If a shop quotes a flat price over the phone without looking at the Mac, treat that with caution.
Can my files be saved?
Often, yes, but it isn't guaranteed. The storage in recent MacBooks is soldered to the logic board and encrypted, so your data can only be reached by getting the board working again, even briefly. The sooner the Mac is treated, the better the odds. If your files matter more than the Mac, tell the shop that at the start. See our guide on recovering files from a broken Mac for more.
Questions to ask a repair shop
Do you do component-level repair, or do you only replace parts?
Is the diagnostic free, and do I get a quote before any work starts?
What happens if you can't fix it? Do I pay anything?
Can you recover my data if the Mac can't be repaired?
How long will it take?
Is there a warranty on the repair, and what does it cover?
Frequently asked questions
How long does liquid damage repair take? Simple cases can be done in a day or two, while more serious corrosion takes longer. The diagnostic will tell you.
Will it definitely be fixed? No honest shop can promise that. The outcome depends on the liquid, how long it sat, whether the Mac was powered on, and which parts were hit.
What if I already turned it on? Power it off and bring it in anyway. It may still be repairable, so tell the technician exactly what happened.
Is a spill covered by my warranty? Standard warranties exclude liquid damage. AppleCare+ may cover it for a fee, so check your plan.
